WIND TURBINE STRUCTURAL ADHESIVES Windblade Application Story ITW Plexus helps improve alternative power production capabilities. Wind energy acceptance is rapidly growing around the world. Compared to all the viable methods of generating electrical power, wind energy gathered in the form of wind farms, appears not only to be the safest, but the least detrimental to the environment. Modern turbines and the lightweight, aerodynamic, efficient wind blades made from high-tech composite materials, allow manufacturers to build units capable of generating more than 4.5 MW of electricity. By increasing the size of the rotor blades, improving manufacturing processes, and taking advantage of technological advances, the cost of power from wind turbines is now competitive with power generated by other methods. With light weight, high strength, and flexibility, ITW Plexus Adhesives help to improve blade quality and manufacturing processes. Traditionally bonded with inexpensive epoxy systems, Plexus has developed a unique long working time 1:1 methacrylate structural adhesive. MA560 and MA590 are increasing in acceptance in this growing market place by increasing blade performance and reducing processing time. By chemically fusing the composite stiffener spars and perimeter flange joints, Plexus increases peel resistance, cycle fatigue and reduces damage encountered during transportation. Room temperature snap cure properties have helped to increase production rates, reduce capital expenses and energy costs associated with post bake ovens needed for some epoxies.
